Like-minded people working towards improving the sexual health of their own communities.

This National Volunteer Week (NVW), we would like to say a HUGE thank you to all our volunteers who generously give their time, energy, and compassion to working with the community.

This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week is Changing Communities. Changing Lives and this certainly is accurate for the current time when it is more important than ever to recognise and acknowledge our volunteers.

To show our support for #NVW2020, two of our volunteers from the Multicultural Community Action Network (M-CAN) are sharing their experience of what volunteering means to them.

M-CAN member from Chinese Community & International Student at Monash University

“I volunteer to help others and as well as to give back to my community. When I first arrived in Australia, I found out that there was a lot of support available. Through my volunteering, I hope that I can provide the same support to other international students.”, says Sara.

Sara has been an active M-CAN member for last six months. She believes that breaking down the stigma associated with talking about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) is vital for ensuring that people access what they need to care for their overall health, including their sexual health.

“Volunteering is one of the best things I have ever done in my life.”

Sungkavi is a public health professional and is passionate about empowering people with control over their own health. She wants to create the awareness of how certain behaviours and habits can act as preventative measures for a variety of health issues.

She says, “I volunteer to help people as well as to learn from them. Volunteering is an amazing opportunity to expand your knowledge base and meet people from various walks of life. M-CAN provides me with the opportunity to do just this. As an individual from a migrant background myself, M-CAN also provides me with a chance to give back to my own community. Volunteering not only aids the communities you help, but also empowers you! It has given me a boost of self-confidence and sharpened my soft skills.

Give volunteering a chance, it’s a great way to step out of your comfort zone and help others around you!”
