10 December International Human Rights Day!

At CEH, we all try to play our small part in redressing human rights inequity through our work, by working with communities to empower them, by advocating to government where inequities exist, by providing information in formats and languages that work for the audiences, by listening and responding to the concerns of communities. We are proud to do so.
On 10 December Human Rights Day it is important to acknowledge that human rights and the fundamental principles of dignity, mutual respect and equity, inform our economic, social, and cultural rights. Yet these are not enjoyed equitably in Australia and in many other places across the world.
👉🏻Human rights are those given to us simply by being human.
👉🏻Human Rights are universal, they apply to everyone.
👉🏻Human Rights are inalienable, they cannot be taken away.
👉🏻Human Rights are interdependent and indivisible, one set of rights cannot be enjoyed without the others.
👉🏻Human Rights are equal and non-discriminatory, all people are treated equally.
👉🏻Human Rights include both rights and obligations.
In Australia our human rights comprise the right to life, the right to a fair trial, freedom from torture and other cruel and inhuman treatment, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the rights to health, education, and an adequate standard of living.
Clearly in Australia these rights are not equally enjoyed.
All of us have a role to play in advocating for those who live in areas where human rights are denied, or unequally applied.

On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
